TMac’s Gear Buying Philosophy:

Buying the right gear. There’s many questions…

NEW OR USED GEAR? A Point and Shoot? A DSLR? A Mirrorless? Which Digital Cinema? Just use my phone…

In over 30 years of shooting both stills and video, I’ve purchased a truck load of cameras. (Don’t tell my wife!) New gear is fresh, but used gear can make a limited budget go farther. Things to consider:

  • Right tool for the job. There’s always another option, another model, another feature. Know what you need for the type of shooting that interests you, not just what looks cool. Different genres require different demands - especially with lenses. Photography and Video are like Construction or Sports, they require the right tool for the job.

  • What’s your focus? Would like to shoot Sports? Portraits? Landscapes? Weddings? Wildlife? Astrophotography? Start with the lens.

  • Used gear = Smart upgrade. I am a huge fan of used gear! A well-cared for used camera or lens with pro features will take your skills further than a brand-new entry-level combo, and not break the bank.

  • Ask before you buy. Pros have been through it. Reach out. The best gear choice often comes from real-world experience, not just specs.

  • Even better! Rent before you buy! Renting photo/video gear is a great way to do your due diligence. Does a camera fit right in your hands? What about the menus? You get the idea. Renting is the ultimate, and most cost effective way to, “try it before you buy it.” (I rent gear specifically before I buy!)
